SNAPPER XING 12

In case you haven't figured it out, I'm a science geek! That's why a story in the STAR TRIBUNE first grabbed me seven years ago. I live far enough out of the Cities to see snapping turtles -- snappers -- all the time. I think they're fascinating creatures...

Billed as a "children's book", fabulously written and illustrated by Holling Clancy Holling, MINN OF THE MISSISSIPPI was a 1952 Newbery Honor book. The detailed pictures are stunning and full of information!

I took the two, smushed them together and came up with SNAPPER XING...

Lance took Dad’s big hand in both of his and said,  “We have to stop the cars. We have to stand in front of them!”

Snapper Xing stopped at the edge of the hot black again. The eggs in her belly were crying for the warm, wet sand. But she could not cross the hot black again.

Dad looked down at Lance and slowly nodded. He said, “Wait a moment.” Taking out his cell phone, he dialed a number then handed the phone to Lance. “That’s the police. Tell them who you are, what you see and what you want.”

Snapper Xing saw that the way was clear. She was tired, but she could run. She lifted her shell from the hot rocks and pushed forward as fast as she could go.
