MINING THE ASTEROIDS Part 42: “Water, Water EVERYWHERE! But not a drop to DRINK…”

Initially, I started this series because of the 2021 World Science Fiction Convention, DisCON which I WOULD have been attending in person if I felt safe enough to do so in person AND it hadn’t been changed to the week before the Christmas Holidays…HOWEVER, as time passed, I knew that this was a subject I was going to explore because it interests me…
As you can see from the Part number, I’ve been writing on Asteroid Mining for a while now. The first time I wrote about mining the asteroids, was a decade ago with this post: https://faithandsciencefiction.blogspot.com/2016/05/slice-of-pie-asteroids-in-fictionand.html

Since then, the buzz around mining the asteroids has mostly been about finding “gold in them thar hills!” (In this case, “them thar hills” were LITERAL hills floating in space.)

But ten years later, the reality seems to be approaching prosaic! Human habitation on THIS planet has always been related to finding “safe harbors”; ie: WATER. Ranging from physically accessible drinking water, to using bodies of water (oceans, seas, lakes, rivers) where we could create accessible ports where to safely load and unload ships – or even pick up stuff that was dropped into the oceans (like spacecraft returning from space.)

Once again, our exploration of Earth has taken a leap into space and the current push is to look for water (more correctly, ICE (not THAT kind of ice – frozen H2O! Man!)) The BUSINESS magazine FORBES/site points out that ice could become the foundation of a High Earth kind of economy: “SpaceX IPO Is A $1.77 Trillion Bet On An Orbital Economy”…

What’s an “orbital economy”? Here’s one definition: “…the commercial and industrial ecosystem centered in Earth's orbit—primarily Low Earth Orbit (LEO)—where economic value is generated, deployed, and sustained rather than just explored.”

So…no more “final frontier”? Just, “OK, FOLKS! What can we get from LEO?”

With the ISS “celebrating 25 years of continuous human presence on November 2, 2025 (having first welcomed its permanent crew on November 2, 2000)”, the next stage of space exploration is lifting us off the surface of Earth to “actually have people LIVE in space”.

That sounds all fine and good, but we ALL know that the end result of investments of huge sums of money (be they dollars, euros, yuan, francs, rupees, or yen) is to make more of the same (unless gold, platinum, and other valuable metals can be mined in significant quantities…which is a significant possibility as well…). So, if someone is going to take the trouble to “mine and process water ice”…what do they get out of it?

For the present, it seems to be that the biggest money maker is the satellites themselves and what they can “give us”: “Satellites quietly enable communications, navigation, financial systems, climate monitoring and disaster response, shaping daily life without drawing attention to themselves.”

Today, that economy includes not ONLY the traditional space-faring nations, but non-traditional space-faring nations. Think of it – the initial investment in space travel was limited to precisely two countries: the United States and the Soviet Union. That held the status quo for decades while the two countries poured rubles and dollars into a race explicitly defined “the space race” surrounded by rhetoric that usually included “them versus us”.

That no longer hold true. While still in front of other countries, have developed space programs independent of Russia and the US: Japan, China, France/ESA, India, Israel, Iran, and North Korea. Of those, at least three created independent space programs out of the necessity of protecting themselves from hostile entities and with no real interest in space exploration (admittedly WE were one of those at one time, to “protect ourselves from the Red Threat”…)

But now everyone wants a piece of the pie. I wouldn’t be surprised to eventually see INDIVIDUALS create space programs for their own purposes (probably not nefarious, rather wealth-driven (as in make MORE money).

It seems however, that ALL of them will need the commodity that has driven Earth’s exploration and colonization since the first Human hollowed out a log and set off to the find out what was “out there”. Within the limits of our very-young exploration of even our own Solar System (you ever wonder wonder what the different space programs call the “exploration of the Solar System”? I think I’ll save that for the next post of Mining the Asteroids…

WRITING ADVICE: Short Stories – Advice and Observation #40: Bruce Bethke & Me

In this feature, I’ll be looking at “advice” for writing short stories – not from me, but from other short story writers. In speculative fiction, “short” has very carefully delineated categories: “The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America specifies word lengths for each category of its Nebula award categories by word count; Novel 40,000 words or over; Novella 17,500 to 39,999 words; Novelette 7,500 to 17,499 words; Short story under 7,500 words.” I’m going to use advice from people who, in addition to writing novels, have also spent plenty of time “interning” with short stories. While most of them are speculative fiction writers, I’ll also be looking at plain, old, effective short story writers. The advice will be in the form of one or several quotes off of which I’ll jump and connect it with my own writing experience. While I don’t write full-time, nor do I make enough money with my writing to live off of it...neither do most of the professional writers...someone pays for and publishes ten percent of what I write. When I started this blog, that was NOT true, so I may have reached a point where my own advice is reasonably good. We shall see as I work to increase my writing output and sales! As always, your comments are welcome!

Without further ado, short story observations by Bruce Bethke – with a few from myself…

In case you didn’t notice, for the FIRST TIME, I’ve dropped the quote marks around “& Me”. That’s because Bruce and I have been friends for a few decades now…

We live in the same metropolitan area and we both write science fiction. We met and hit it off at a “local” science fiction convention called MiniCon (since 1968, at which time I was 11…so I didn’t go…). He invited me to a writer’s group along with a couple o f other writers; one of who withdrew because we were too critical of their writing; the other who had several tings published, but from whom I haven’t heard since…

The biggest difference is that he’s “famous” and well-known for inventing the word “cyberpunk”. But what’s MOST important is that instead of sitting around in his fancy Author’s Office on the Fifty-seventh Floor of the IDS Building (the tallest skyscraper in the state of Minnesota!), he’s long been engaged in building something bigger than his reputation/ego: he’s been building the skills of new writers (myself included!)

I’ve long contended (after teaching science in middle schools, high schools, private schools, charter schools, and summer schools for 41 years) that teachers are BORN and not made. I have met and worked with a dozen teachers who came into either my classroom as student teachers or into the building I was working in who started with a great deal of energy, gurgling with ideas, and certain they were going to make a HUGE DIFFERENCE in the world…and then quickly discovered that their students didn’t care what they were supposed to be learning -- they just wanted to have “have a good time!”

I watched those teachers burn out quick and a short time later start a new career in something sedate and calm and under control: like riot police…

Teaching is not only never-ending and extremely difficult; and not only don’t STUDENTS seem to care; their parents don’t seem to care, either. Oh, and society doesn’t particularly care about what goes on in its schools until something is going WRONG, and then it’s the teacher’s/district’s/society’s fault that their kids are failures…

My GUESS is that Bruce has done his job, nurtured new writers and then sent those successful writers into careers of acclaim and success…only to be forgotten in their Big Award Acceptance Speech, replaced by the importance of the support and investment of agents, family, friends, their current publisher, and pet iguanas.

Bruce spent many hours (days, months, years) teaching dozens of writers who now have garnered awards and fame – some of them have appeared in the pages of STUPEFYING STORIES, many are writers in their own right. While I’m not one of “those famous writers”, I DO have several novels, lots of short stories, and even an accolade or two! I’ve also thrown my efforts into supporting Bruce’s continued efforts by writing for the website (go here: https://stupefyingstories.com/; then search Guy Stewart). The articles I wrote gratis; he’s also published a few of my regular short stories for pay (I’ve been submitting there for the past 16 years. OH! A note as well, our friendship has NOT included “free publishing” – Bruce has rejected more than a few stories I’ve submitted. I guarantee you that I’ve been subjected to the same treatment as any “regular hopeful writer”!)

A VERY few of the writers Bruce nurtured and published: Vox Day, Anatoly Belilovsky, Caileigh Marshall, Daniel Eness, Jamie Lackey, Beth Cato, Evan Dicken, Anya Ow, and lots and lots of other people…(including me), went on to “fame and glory”. I even have a bit of that, though my fame and glory comes from having been a middle school and high school science teacher and the four handfuls of (once) young people who went on to become doctors, researchers, soldiers, therapists, (a couple writers, even!), as well as better students, and moms, dads, and (nowadays) even a few really great grandparents!

I continue to write and be published, I FINALLY wrote a 750 page novel, MARTIAN HOLIDAY, which is not ONLY my magnum opus, but also (a new pair of words I stumbled across recently) Subcreational Evangelism (defined as: “a concept that merges J.R.R. Tolkien’s theology of sub-creation with the Christian practice of evangelism to use creative arts, storytelling, and world-building (secondary worlds) to reflect the truth of the Gospel and point people toward God.”

I HAVE DEFINED Martian Holiday as a hard science story – the data on Mars that I used was as up-to-date as I could find. I integrated it into the story. And it IS a story – it has crazies who believe that aliens visited Mars in the millennial past and will return soon to give power to true believers to take over Mars and make it their own…the Soldiers of the Face believe that the oddity “face on Mars” was built for them and holds untold technological secrets with which they can make Mars over in their image.

The fact that there ARE aliens who visited Mars once, some of whom died there, doesn’t matter to the Soldiers. They are the Alien’s Chosen Ones. But there’s something ELSE going on on Mars – it’s a spiritual awakening as Christians begin to affect how the government and regular people view Artificial Humans; paralleled by Christians who fought to free slaves and make owning another Human on Earth illegal. All of THAT is mixed together with Biblical figures: the apostle Paul; Daniel (of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego fame); Queen Esther; and Steven.

ALL of this to say, “Dear Bruce, Thank you.” (I’d sign my name to it, but then I’d have to find all the OTHER people who’d be able to say the same thing to him…and that would make for a REALLY long article!)

IDEAS ON TUESDAY 721

Each Tuesday, rather than a POSSIBLY IRRITATING ESSAY, I'd like to both challenge you and lend a helping hand. I generate more speculative and teen story ideas than I can ever use. My family rolls its collective eyes when I say, "Hang on a second! I just have to write down this idea..." Here, I'll include the initial inspiration (quote, website, podcast, etc.) and then a thought or two that came to mind. These will simply be seeds -- plant, nurture, fertilize, chemically treat, irradiate, test or stress them as you see fit. I only ask if you let me know if anything comes of them? Regarding Fantasy, this insight was startling: “I see the fantasy genre as an ever-shifting metaphor for life in this world, an innocuous medium that allows the author to examine difficult, even controversial, subjects with impunity. Honor, religion, politics, nobility, integrity, greed—we’ve an endless list of ideals to be dissected and explored. And maybe learned from.” – Melissa McPhail.

Fantasy Trope: Fairy Tale
Event: http://www.moonlyf.com/2013/07/the-magic-onions-2013-fairy-garden.html

"Fairy tales do not give the child the idea of the evil or the ugly; that is in the child already because it is in the world already. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St George to kill the dragon." —GK Chesterton

Leyla Manghirmalani wrinkled her nose at the overpowering smell of onions and called out, “Jie? What are you doing?”

Jie Busiri leaned back from his dorm room desk, holding a chopping knife and said, “What’s it look like?”

“That you’re stinking up the whole dorm floor on purpose?”

“No, not stinking up anything. I’m calling the onion fairies,” he said it like he was a little kid.

Leyla shook her head, “Another one of your lame attempts at recreating ancient fairy magic?”

“Hey! That’s not fair! Didn’t I make it rain last week after I did that Lakota rain dance?”

She snorted, “After checking the weather report for three weeks straight and then picking a day even the weather divas all agreed had a greater than ninety percent chance of rain.” She waved her hand in front of her face and backed up, “I don’t want to weep over spilled onion juice. I’ll come back...”

“No! Wait!” Jie grabbed something from his desk and strode across the room, chopping knife in one hand.

Leyla laughed, “If I hadn’t known you since pre-school, I’d have just gone running down the hall dialing 911 and telling them a freshman U of M student had just gone crazy.”

Jie shook his head, handing her a piece of pink gum. “Chew this, it’ll keep your eyes from watering.”

“Why didn’t you just soak them in cold salty water?”

He looked at her like she was crazy and said, “They won’t be magic then, stupid.”

“Hey! Don’t call me stupid! You’re the one they’d throw in the loony bin if they asked why you were chopping onions!” She chewed and stepped into the room and her eyes didn’t tear up automatically. “Hey, it works.”

He blew a bubble and said, “Why do you think I’m doing it?”

“I thought you wanted to be struck by your onion magic?”

He sniffed in disdain and went back to his chopping board. “I’m not interested in helping myself. I’m going to place the slices of onions with a slice of mushroom on top...”

Leyla cut in, “If I get a pain hamburger from Mac’s, can I just put them on and make a Whopper?”

“Ha, ha, ha,” he said, chopping again. “Just wait and see how well our floor does on finals – then we’ll see who has the last laugh!”

They hung out the rest of the night and Leyla helped him place the mushroom and onion slices in the rooms of the people willing to go with his craziness. By the time they were done studying and onion-placing, it was past two in the morning. “I gotta get some sleep,” she said, “I have a chem final first thing.”

Jie gave her a hug, saying, “I made sure I put the biggest onion slice in your room and I piled the rest of the mushrooms on top of it.”

“Oh, thank you so much,” she dead-panned. “Thank you so, so much for your fairly wonderful generosity.”

He smirked then said, “Just you wait, Leyla Higgins, just you wait.”

She smiled at the MY FAIR LADY jab and headed for bed.
