Free Fiction On Thursdays...

I've been sharing an ongoing piece of work since 2009, not long after I started this blog.

Of the pieces I've started and completed:

A SHORT LONG JOURNEY NORTH (Started in August 2009, completed in September of 2016)

LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION (Started in February of 2013, and still far from complete)

MARTIAN HOLIDAY (Started in February of 2009, and still far from complete)

THE RECONSTRUCTION OF MAI LI HASTINGS (Started in March of 2009, completed in January 2013)

These still exist in my blog archives, just blocked from public view. I also wrote two others (at least) which I was able to delete:

THREAT OF MAGIC (Started in July of 2008, completed in August of 2009)

THIRTEEN SQUARE MILES (Started in May of 2008, completed in July of 2009)

I also don't recall if I wrote HEIRS OF THE SHATTERED SPHERES: EMERALD OF EARTH here or not. I vaguely remember the trip up the space elevator being posted, but it was taken down a long time ago. I have a cover letter from 2010, so the book was done by then. Prior to that, I'm not sure.

I've also tried a few manuscripts for picture books as well.

The net sum of the ones I've lifted from POSSIBLY IRRITATING ESSAYS and actually polished enough for submission, at this point, is ZERO. I DID try one of the picture books, "Yung Lo, the Emperor's Goldfish". Sent it to my agent at Red Fox Literary...and she hated it. (That was the end of my attempts to write picture books.)

The point of the exercise above is to look at how I'm spending my writing time. It's already limited because I'm NOT a full-time writer and usually have OTOGU to deal with (use of this minor god is stolen from Bruce Bethke, one of my heroes and the Executive Editor (shared with his wife) of Stupefying Stories (see the link button to the right). Read about this capricious imp here: http://stupefyingstories.blogspot.com/2013/01/2012-year-in-review-part-3.html

If you don't want to read the full thing, just the legend at the very beginning is all that's necessary!

So, the upshot of this is that I'm suspending my Fiction on Thursdays for the time being until I can figure out what to do with it. It's NOT doing the job I intended for it, which was to write books in full view of the world and hope for critiques and ideas as well as to "force" me to keep creating novels.

I might add that the probability of taking them out and completing the process at any time in the future is low. Part of the problem is that I'm a better writer now and I recognize that the books weren't...um...great and would require substantial work to get them to submission quality.

The other part is that I want to make sure I've got some credibility -- and maybe even an agent -- to start sending out my YA/MG science fiction. It's not exactly a thing now...

For now, my Fiction of Thursday is going to end. Sorry if you were following either MARTIAN HOLIDAY or LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION. The possibility of me finishing THOSE is much, much better!

LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION: CHAPTER 108 The Trials of Team Four – 6

On Earth, there are three Triads intending to integrate not only the three peoples and stop the war that threatens to break loose and slaughter Humans and devastate their world; but to stop the war that consumes Kiiote economy and Yown’Hoo moral fiber. All three intelligences hover on the edge of extinction. The merger of Human-Kiiote-Yown’Hoo into a van der Walls Society might not only save all three – but become something not even they could predict. Something entirely new...

The young experimental Triads are made up of the smallest primate tribe of Humans – Oscar and Xiaomara; the smallest canine pack of Kiiote – six, pack leaders Qap and Xurf; and the smallest camelid herd of Yown’Hoo – a prime eleven, Dao-hi the Herd mother. On nursery farms and ranches away from the TC cities, Humans have tended young Yown’Hoo and Kiiote in secret for decades, allowing the two, warring people to reproduce and grow far from their home worlds at great profit to Humanity. Then the war spilled over on to the Human homeworld and all three are threatened with extinction…

STAGE DIRECTION: (Spotlight falls on each as they speak then shuts off, illuminating the next; then all three spotlights fall on them as they chorus together.)

Yown’Hoo: “The literal decay of the fiber of Yown’Hoo morality accelerated when we refused peace with Kiiote.”
Kiiote: “Interbreeding, internecine war, and ritual cannibalism devoured us in resisting harmony with Yown’Hoo.”
Human: “Material gain from both Yown’Hoo and Kiiote fed our greed, so concord held no profit.”
All: “We might do something none of us alone can do, we might braid an unbreakable cord of unity.” (4/6/2019)

The tentacle that the Mother of All pulled from its sheathe was leathery, dark, and deeply wrinkled. She lifted the fingers at its tip toward Dao-hi and slowly unfurled them. The Earth-born and raised Yown’Hoo had seen Humans who had aged this much look as haggard, but never one of her own kind. In fact, she had rarely seen Yown’Hoo older than herself. The Mother of All said, “I am not entirely ten thousand of the Earth years old, though you are but a strand of DNA compared to me.” She shuddered in gentle laughter. “My parts have been regrown and replaced many times, though this mind has indeed experienced ten thousand years of events.”

“But how…”

“I do not remember events as you or your Human and Kiiote partners remember. I was created for my role on this earth, but Yown’Hoo from antiquity on Y’eh One of Seven Hundred and Thirty-nine. I am able to speak Y’eh 2349, a tongue so old that you would think that I was speaking in Human. For one as old as I, memories are stored in tight coils of DNA then packed in cells that rarely die and incorporated into my very bones,” she lifted  hoof and bowed her head to show a crown of bone.

Dao-hi’s voice was a whisper, “A Crown of Wisdom?” She paused, “I thought that was myth?”

“Quite real, and quite painful as well. There is no joy in wearing this Crown, only burden. The most important DNA, with its messages, can be deliberately drawn back to conscious memory as needed,” she looked at the Human girl, Xiaomara, adding, “Much as your kind can slow your breathing and heartrate through intense meditation, I can pull up memories stored in the Crown. Some of those memories were stolen from the echoes of Yown’Hoo. Others are more complex and I need the help of the Triad to reveal ancient memories of demons and conjures. Nevertheless, when all of the memories are bound together, the plan created the first Triad chose becomes clear. It is the reason the Triads were formed. In time, the Triads will absorb echoes, conjures, and Human demons alike – the worst into the best. That, my daughter, is the Plan that will save all three, weaving us into a civilization strong enough to stand against Discord.”

For a moment, Dao-hi felt an overwhelming sense of disappointment. She looked at the rest of her tiny Herd – Lan-mai-ti and Por-go-el. Her intestines twisted a bit, knowing that she must turn this time Herd over to the Mother of All. Ji-Hi said, “You must lead, child.”

“Me?” Without thinking, Dao-hi reared and bared her tentacles.

Ji-hi trembled with laughter. “Of course, daughter. I can no more lead this mission than St. Admiral could lead the Humans to freedom. Our destinies are entwined but it is not my place to overthrow you!”

This time Dao-hi reared intentionally then dropped to the snowy ground. It was an ancient tradition going back to presentience, when control of Herd would be fought to the death between females, then the males were trampled to smears on the Plain from which grew the sweetest grasses. The grass thus fertilized would sprout as fast as ninety centimeters a day and store a peculiar suite of compounds that would stimulate the new Herd Mother to pass eggs into her pouches and hunt wild new males. For a moment, instinct warred with cognition and she felt mind begin to slide away. Then she focused on the mission Commander Baksh had laid on them, reared again, then pulled her tentacles back into their sheathes and bowed deeply to the Mother of All.

Who immediately dipped her head, saying, “You will be a worthy Mother when your time comes, daughter. Now, to the mission. We must run.”

“Run?” said Dao-hi.

“Indeed, to the dunes to the north. We will meet the rest of your Triad and accomplish the deed we set before you.”

Dao-hi scowled and, glancing at her tiny Herd, said, “You will share that mission with me now, Mother of All.” She added a bow, slightly less subservient than she’d done a moment ago – which she completed when the Mother of All stamped a hoof, very slightly.

“Impertinent DNA sample!” but the tone was not anger, it was pride. She said, “We run, daughter. We run to gather an army and prepare to challenge the Yown’Hoo, the Kiiote, and the Human so that they will have no choice but to cease this absurd conflict and finally grow into the Society they have the potential to create.”

Kiiote: “Interbreeding, internecine war, and ritual cannibalism devoured us in resisting harmony with Yown’Hoo.”

All: “We might do something none of us alone can do, we might braid an unbreakable cord of unity.” (4/6/2019)

Mother Kan Yuen said, “The reason we created the Triads was so that the three hidden Triads will eventually bond, and then from them, form the initial van der Walls Society. From there, we expect that the effect would allow the spontaneous formation of others.”

Scowling, Xiao said, “Why not just educate everyone and have them start?” She paused, thinking furiously, “Creating a new religion out of the concept might have been effective. Humans, Yown’Hoo, and Kiiote all have the capacity for accepting religion. That would have taken less…”

“We tried.” She shook her head, “The result was worse than we could have anticipated. That experiment had to be sterilized with a pogrom of the ones we created.”

“A…what?”

Mother Kan Yuen reached a store front that had opened onto the main thoroughfare of the ancient mall. As she appeared to walk into the darkness, the air around her sparkled orange and green. Xiao stopped then stepped back. “Where are you taking me?”

“Follow child and you will see.”

Once they passed through the portal, they came into a brilliantly lit laboratory. Along one side were parts of robots – not only Human forms, but Yown’Hoo and Kiiote as well. The other side was marked by large view screens, most of them unlit. Xiao stopped, arms folded over her chest and said, “I don’t want to ask again, ‘Where are you taking me?’”

Mother Kan Yuen looked over her shoulder and smiled as she kept walking. “Ever the strong, stubborn hero, eh, Xiomara?”

“How do you know me?” Then she made a disgusted sound, shaking her head. “Stupid question.” She looked directly at Mother, not moving, waiting. The other woman turned around, “All right. Transparency. You’ve separated me from the rest of my team. You have me alone. What do I need to do?”

Mother Kan Yuen turned away, back rigid. Then she sagged and when she turned to face Xiao, she looked old. Worn out. She said slowly, “We lost contact with the other two Triads years ago. They may still be active and healthy, but there are forces at work among all three Peoples that are fighting our concept.” She sighed, “There have always been Humans and Yown’Hoo, and Kiiote who have fought the idea of creating a new civilization.”

“But why? I don’t understand!” She stomped her foot before she could stop herself. Some leader she’d turned out to be. Seg-go, Alli-go, and Nah-hi-el stepped through the portal behind her and came to stand with her.

Mother Kan Yuen, “You may be the only Triad to survive and so we needed to get you out of Minneapolis and to go into hiding.”

“But that’s retreat! We can fight this!”

“You can. But you’d all be killed. We – the Leadership – and I have a different plan. Maybe it’s what we should have done initially. We want you to integrate into the community in Winnipeg – all of you. We hope then that your tolerance of each other,” she held up a hand, “Let me change that, the celebration you do as a Triad, your success, your integration among yourselves, will be a sort of…‘plague’ that will pull together the Humans who live in the city and the Fosters who raise Kiiote pups and Yown’Hoo younglings. It should happen naturally. Now, daughter, will you join me?”

The Pack sent by Commander Patrick Bakhsh (ret), leader of the Triad refugees from the Twin Cities had Kiiote, Xurf and a temporary Herd Mother, Zei-go. With them were the maturing Herd members, Hil-hi-el, Jus-hi-el, Pack members Fax, and Doj, and the mere potential intelligence, Herd member Eel-go-el. They listened with Kiiote ears pricked up and Yown’Hoo earholes cupped with pilo-ridges. A Human adolescent dressed in well-tanned hide trimmed with fur was saying, “The dude was a mechanic; much older than me. I would ask questions, but be would only shake his head…”

“What is ‘dude’?” Zei-go interrupted.

“A young male,” Kendi said, scowling.

“You just said he was older than you,” said Eel-go-el.

The Herd Mother aimed a kick at the potential intelligence. In this Triad, there was none lower that it. It dodged. “I am confused!” it cried.

“You will be confused more often as you grow into intelligence. Until then, remain silent, watch, and learn.”

“You, what is your name?” The son of Khadijah and Morrison; grandson of Song and Rey and Abbas and Julianna; great grandson of St. Admiral, Marvel Louise Williams-Frederick, had been their contact in the deep wilderness of Minnesota State. But he had not been expecting them, and they’d no idea who they were to contact on the mission The Commander had set for them. The potential, addressed by a Human they needed to complete their mission, answered. Zei-go aimed another kick, deliberately missing, emphasizing the potential’s place in the Triad.

Xurf spoke instead, seeing the point the smallest Yown’Hoo was asking about, “Why would that make any difference?”

“He’s a…a…honorary ‘dude’. He doesn’t act like the oldsters I’m known before.”

Zei-go said, “How many Humans are in your Tribe?”

“My Tribe?”

“Yes, Humans live in Tribes of two or more. This is what we’ve always been taught,” said Xurf.

Kendi snorted, “I don’t know where you got your information from. Most of us out here live alone. Too many of us get together, and the Forces come to take us out.”

“Who are the Forces?” said Zei-go.

Kendi shook his head, “I thought you Triad people were supposed to be geniuses. That’s what the Commander said.”

Xurf and Zei-go looked at each other. Finally Xurf said, “We like to think so, but we have never been out of the Twin Cities. We know of nothing but what we were brought up in.”

Kendi sighed, then said, “The mechanic said that all boys know how to work with machines like this ‘tank’. I can’t be a boy because I can’t make it work…” he hung his head, shaking it. The Pack Leader and the Herd Mother knew the motion well. Both Xio and ‘Car used it when they were about to give up.

Xurf softened his voice, lowering himself a bit closer to the ground as he said, “We may not know your world outside of the Twin Cities, but the gift of the Triad is that we each have strengths that will play to the others. Show us this ‘tank’. Together, perhaps we can make it work again.”

Kendi lifted his head, nodded and said, “It’s not close.”

Xurf looked to Zei-go and said, “I have no doubt your Herd can make the trip no matter how grueling, but if the Pack falters, would you be willing to help us?”

She freed the tip of a tentacle to snap an emphatic agreement. “Commander Baksh sent us together. I cannot believe that he would do so without expecting our skills would mesh and we would experience success. Of course we will.”

Xurf snapped his jaws in surprise. He’d not seen this side of the Yown’Hoo. He sneezed, of course he hadn’t seen anything like it – she was junior to the Herd Mother, Dao-hi. This was her first command. He looked to the wild Human and said, “We agree together that we will follow you.”

Kendi bowed and said, “Follow me.”

The Triad fell into single file, beneath trees laden with snow. “There wasn’t this much snow in the Twin Cities,” said Fax.

Xurf growled at the pup then said, “You are ‘Car’s friend. We understand, but you need to act less Human.”

“That’s not why I made the statement,” Fax said, farting in irritation.

“Why then?” asked Herd Mother.

“Beings – Humans, Yown’Hoo, even Kiiote leave tracks in the snow. The more snow, the more obvious the tracks.”

Kendi stopped in front of them and came back. Squatting, he faced Fax, “You see something I don’t?”

Fax flattened to the ground then rose a bit. This Human smelled nearly the same as Oscar, young, exciting, anxious, and daring all at once. Fax said, “Not what I see – you Humans have better vision than Yown’Hoo and Kiiote. But in scent, we are unassailable.”

“What do you smell?” said Kendi immediately.

“I smell burning plastic.”

The Human stood, spun in the direction they had been going and said, “That’s not plastic, it’s oil.” He looked down at Fax, “We need to hurry. Something may be wrong.” He headed into the woods an after a moment of hesitation, the Triad followed.

Qilf had a horrible thought. She said, “You don’t think this idiot creature is leading us to some sort of decrepit Human aircraft, do you?”

Qap farted derision, adding a double jaw snap of certainty. She said in Growl-Snap, “It knows something; and Retired would not have sent us here for no reason, so he must know something about this flying vehicle.”

“Can we possibly fly such a thing?”

The Pack ran in silence before Qap finally ventured, “The basics shouldn’t be difficult. But the practice seems particularly daunting. I do not think our passengers would be able to operate a flying machine built for adult Humans.”

Qilf said, “In our bipedal form we might, but it would still be difficult. Humans have incredibly slender digits.”

They kept running until Kang dropped back a bit, and said, “We need to take an extended break. The young Humans will be cold despite their coverings, and I need to both catch my breath and find the best path.”

Qap threw Qilf a look to say, “Keep an eye on her.” She slowed to Kang’s pace, which slowed further until the Pack – Qap, female Pack lead and Qilf, male Pack second after Xurf, stood panting beneath the branches of an enormous pine. Two very young Humans, the older a female called Cynthia; the younger a male called Kobey. Kang appeared to be a semi-barbarian Kiiote, possibly even born on Earth, growing among Humans, or worse, alone. This presented major problems as Retired had taught the Triad that there were only a limited number of Earth-born Pack on Earth at any given time, and their whereabouts and skills known and tested.

Neither issue was one she could deal with at the moment, and even thought Qilf was Pack Second, Qap had no desire to make any decisions without discussion with Xurf. Human-Kiiote interactions were his specialty. Hers was and continued to be Human technology. It was why Retired had sent her on this mission. She drew a deep breath and said, “This plant is among my most favorite on Earth.”

There was movement above…Qap came to full bipedal mode in an instant as it was clear anything coming from a tree had to be Human, whose descent from arboreal primates was both well-known and disgusting. She snatched Kobey’s spear and said to Cynthia, “Protect yourselves!”

Qap scurried backward and a moment later, Qilf was beside her.

Instead of assassins or warriors dropping from the branches though, two Humans, size-equivalent of Oscar and Xiomara, slid to the ground with their arms extended down, palms up, the Human equivalent of a Kiiote gesture of submission. Qap barked surprise and said in English, “How is it you know such communication?”

The female Human said, “We have spent many years curled as disciples at the feet of Zir, She Who Caused Peace With Humans.”

Qap fought to hold her bipedal shape and only barely succeeded. Qilf did not, instead collapsing his frame to press belly-first to the frozen, needle strewn ground. He even whimpered. Qap swallowed hard, her tongue accidentally protruding to pant, then regained control and said, “How do you know the Great Pack Leader?”

The male said, “We suckled at the teat of her wisdom as we grew.”

Qap shuddered, fighting to keep her bipedal shape. Beside her, Qilf whimpered. Qap said, “Who are you?”

The female stepped forward. She was dressed in heavy, insulating gear, Qap sniffed, made from deer hide. Impressive. ‘Car and Xio would have no idea how to perform such efforts to create clothing. These two seemed comfortable in the animal skins. “I am Selene. My friend is Marama. We were warned that you were coming…”

“How could you have known that?” Qap snarled.

Neither Human showed fear in scent or facial expression. The male, Marama, said, “We were warned of your arrival.”

Qap snapped her jaw, sending a growl and fart to Qilf demanding he gather his wits. She said, “Retired warned you?”

Selene laughed, “Hardly. Our operatives in the Cities sent word that the Triad was under attack. The Great Pack Mother had long-laid plans for this. It was, in fact expected. She trained our small group for its contingency. We know you have need to rendezvous north with the rest of the Triad. And we know that we will be joining you and the other Triad Corps to head for Grendl, Manitoba.”

Qap barked in stunned surprise. The place in Manitoba was a tightly held secret. Retired, more properly, Lieutenant Commander Patrick Bakhsh, had repeatedly emphasized the secrecy surrounding the place. None of the Triad from the Cities knew what it was precisely, except a place. “What is it?” she asked.

The Humans glanced at each other then they shrugged in unison, a peculiar, species specific movement Qap had struggled to recognize but now knew it was indicative of deep mystery for Humans. They rarely shrugged. Almost never in unison. Marama said, “Great Pack Mother only left directions for us to follow to reach the dune forest – whatever that is – and to take you there.”

Selene added, “We thought the direction was nonsense.” She shook her head slowly, “We see now that we are sadly mistaken.” She sighed, “And we see that we’re going to have to take you there. Right after we blow up our home.”

Kiiote: “Interbreeding, internecine war, and ritual cannibalism devoured us in resisting harmony with Yown’Hoo.”

Natiel Henogledd shouted, “I’ve done all the research I need to! Bakhsh is a traitor!”

“I disagree,” I said, staring at him. I ruined my solid attack by swaying and spreading my legs farther apart to steady myself.

“Your opinion doesn’t matter!” he shouted.

“Why?”

He stared at me, sputtered, looked down at the ground, then looked up again. “You don’t know him like I know him.”

“He raised me,” I said. “In every way he’s been my mentor, my…if not father, my surrogate grandfather. He’s been like a grandfather to all…”

Natiel turned away, then turned back to me, “I’m glad he was a grandfather to someone, because he’s never been the grandfather he should have been to me. He IS my grandfather.”

It was my turn to look like an idiot, “He’s your grandfather?”

Nat repeated the last phrase, first in SnarlSnap, “{long howl} yip, yip; /drawn out fart\.” That one literally meant, “‘elder’ ‘sperm rub’ ‘close possession’.” In ‘Hoonish, he said, “/slapping arms together three times\, #three shrieking whistles in the key of D#.” It meant, literally, “‘it is MINE!’, ‘it is from time far beyond here!’”

When I closed my mouth and managed to keep my insides there as well, I croaked, “How can you speak all three?”

He snorted then said, “How can you speak all three?”

Scowling, I said, “We had to in order to work together. We…”

“‘…couldn’t favor one language over another’…”

Startled, I snapped, “Where’d you get that from?”

“The same place you did: my grandfather.”

“But…” I didn’t know what I wanted to ask. I sat down on the ground, staring at Nat. “You speak SnarlSnap and ‘Hoonish and Spandaringlish…”

I couldn’t believe it when he said, “I speak English, too.” Me and Xiao could both speak our baby languages – English and Chinese. We spent some time when we were younger messing around with how both of them had gotten tangled up in the Spanish – or Spanglish, really, that most people on North America spoke. There was even some French mixed in, like critique, déjà vu, and voyeur (one Xiao accused me of once)…But how did Nat speak it? Who was he? I stared at him for a bit, thinking about Retired and decided where Commander Baksh had dark hair with lots of silver in it, Nat had light brown – more like mine. He was built the same way though, almost skinny, but with hard muscle that corded like cable. His nose was littler than Retired’s and his chin was sharper. He also didn’t have much of a beard, like me, too.

“We could be cousins,” I said abruptly.

He studied me and I was suddenly aware of how I looked – mostly like someone who’d just crawled up from an underground tunnel. There was something else, too in his close scrutiny that made me blush. I wanted to rearrange myself, but that would be too obvious. Instead I said, “So, Retired…”

“Who’s Retired?”

“Commander Baksh. He calls himself that.”

Nat snorted. “He wasn’t retired when I was little. He was always busy.” He shook his head. “What about him?”

“He sent me here. Specifically. He wanted me to find a shelter that contained a wing I could use to fly, combining helium and a hydrogen jet and head for a place called Saint Clodoald. He said there was a plane or a tank there.”

“Why would he want you to do that?”

I didn’t know for sure if I could trust Nat, but he knew the commander – he was Retired’s grandson, for God’s sake! Still, I was more grandson than he was. And why was that? I pursed my lips, then said, “We need a vehicle that can carry the Triad all the way to Grendl.” I was only a little surprised when Nat stunned me again.

LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION: CHAPTER 104 The Trials of Team Three – 6

Xiaomara Mary-Laura Kimpo set her jaw, lifting her chin then said, “What could you possibly teach me?” She braced herself for a bellowing, angry reply.

Instead, the Human Mother Kan Yuen whispered, “Only that a soft answer turns away wrath, child. And once Earth has grown the Triads into effective governing units, Humanity, Kiiote, and Yown’Hoo will need all of their wisdom and skill to softly turn aside the spectre that seeks to devour us all.”

An image shimmered into existence between them. It wasn’t three dimensional, though it wasn’t a flat, either. It was other…some…thing intangible, malevolent, horrifying…yet it was not spirit. It was technology; technology so far beyond any member of the Triad, that not only did it appear to her to be magic…it might even be necromancy, speaking with the dead to determine the future.

Hairs stood up on her arms and the back of her neck. She whispered, “What was that?”

“You encountered one earlier on your journey. The Kiiote call them,” she precisely imitated a sound that was entirely non-Human, most like the scream an Earth dog made when struck by a car. Horrible yet entirely recognizable; a sound that drove deep into the primitive heart of any Human. “Call them ‘conjures’  in English, Chinese, and Bengali, the two you have seen are creations of the Kiiote. But the Yown’Hoo have created them as well and call them echoes. We have called them demons since the Fall.”

“Demons are imaginary!” Xiao exclaimed.

“Your ancestors called them mó. They’re creatures who are…pressed out of condensed matter. If you were to cut one open, it would have no organs and there would be no differentiation inside, but they are alive. They’re easy to make but are only good for a few things – some originated on Kii.” As she watched, the creature made sounds that were animalistic but had the rhythm and purposeful cohesion of language.

Xiao whispered, “The Kiiote didn’t make them, did they?”

“These are the demons of a shameful past, they believe they are sent to torture their minds.” She paused a long time before she said, “The Kiiote had no idea the conjures had followed them to Earth, but we Humans have been inadvertently creating them as well – or rather than creating them, inviting them to enter our universe.”

Xiao snorted, saying, “Sounds like woo woo to me.”

The image appeared abruptly, this time turning toward her. She couldn’t help it, she crouched lower, her pulse pounding in her ears, and she felt light headed. It vanished and Mother Kan Yuen said, “You don’t act like it’s a figment of your imagination.”

Xiao straightened up, hawked and spat on the floor then said, “Fine. The thing taps some sort of primitive, savage memory. But that doesn’t make them dangerous now!”

“Your Kiiote counterpart Xurf might disagree with you, child.”

“He doesn’t lead the Pack! Qap does!”

Mother Kan Yuen burst out laughing, a disturbing sound in the close confines of the mall. The rest of her tiny Herd, Seg-go, Ali-go, and Nah-hi-el still lay on the ground, curled tightly in on themselves. “They lead the Pack together, child. You and Oscar were designed to lead the tribe of Humanity together as well…”

“We’re not going to lead anything! ‘Car’s an idiot boy! A child! He couldn’t lead himself out of a paper bag!” She stomped her foot then blushed furiously at the childish display. She was supposed to be more mature than ‘Car! She should be more like Retired. She swallowed her anger and forced herself to apologize, “Forgive me, Mother. I am an idiot sometimes…”

The elderly woman inclined her head, “You are a child.” Xiao looked up, opened her mouth to angrily fire back when the woman burst out laughing. Xiao’s face and neck burned with embarrassed anger. The woman stepped forward and bowed slightly, “This shows that not only are you able to leash your temper, use your tongue as a rudder to steer the ship of your mind well, you are also strong-willed and have much to offer the Triad.”

Xiao opened her mouth and Mother Kan Yuen looked at her, eyes narrowing the tiniest bit. Xiao closed her mouth, thought for several moments, then said, “You tígōng zhìhuì, Madre.”

The elder woman nodded, “Even speaking Spandaringlish, you inflect the Chinese words carefully.” She paused, “Perhaps you do have what it takes to become a great communicator.”

“Communicator?”

Mother Kan Yuen nodded, turned and beckoned to Xiao and her Herd, “Indeed. Retired told me that he wishes me to tell you’re the complete plan of why we constructed the Triads. He says,” she turned abruptly and caught Xiao with a hard gaze the younger woman couldn’t turn from, “…that the time is at hand to move all of you into the final phase of the program.”

“The what?”

“The reason we created the Triads was so that the three Triads will bond, and then from them, form the initial van der Walls Society. From there, we expect that the effect will allow the spontaneous formation of others.”

That one we had to destroy with a massive pogrom.”

“A…what?”

Mother Kan Yuen reached a store front that had opened onto the main thoroughfare of the ancient mall. As she appeared to walk into the darkness, the air around her sparkled orange and green. Xiao stopped then stepped back. “Where are you taking me?”

“Follow child and you will see.”

LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION: CHAPTER 103 The Trials of Team Two – 6

On Earth, there are three Triads intending to integrate not only the three peoples and stop the war that threatens to break loose and slaughter Humans and devastate their world; but to stop the war that consumes Kiiote economy and Yown’Hoo moral fiber. All three intelligences hover on the edge of extinction. The merger of Human-Kiiote-Yown’Hoo into a van der Walls Society might not only save all three – but become something not even they could predict. Something entirely new...

The young experimental Triads are made up of the smallest primate tribe of Humans – Oscar and Xiomara; the smallest canine pack of Kiiote – six, pack leaders Qap and Xurf; and the smallest camelid herd of Yown’Hoo – a prime eleven, Dao-hi the Herd mother. On nursery farms and ranches away from the TC cities, Humans have tended young Yown’Hoo and Kiiote in secret for decades, allowing the two, warring people to reproduce and grow far from their home worlds.

All: “We might do something none of us alone can do, we might braid an unbreakable cord of unity.” (3/6/2019)

The Human hung his head and said, “There’s nothing I can give you as proof, except my scent. We all know the scent of my great-grandmother. She tried to save all of us but failed.” He paused, “My great-grandmother failed.” He lifted his head. “She failed but you are part of a mission to complete her dream. You are on a quest to redeem her sacrifice, to realize the world she sought to create. I do not know if I can help, but on my grandmother’s grave, I pledge to help you in any way that I can.”

The Pack sent by Commander Patrick Bakhsh (ret), leader of the Triad refugees from the Twin Cities, Kiiote Xurf, Fax, and Doj, with temporary Herd Mother, Zei-go and the rest, some maturing Herd members Hil-hi-el, Jus-hi-el, and the mere potential intelligence, Eel-go-el moved forward.

The rest of the small Pack they had encountered, stood hidden in the wood behind the great-grandson of St. Admiral, mere shadows, now moved forward…Xurf growled the Triad to a halt then said, “How can you possibly help? You have nothing I can smell, and this is your home.”

The Human laughed – Xurf knew it meant amusement, but a peculiar kind of amusement. Oscar, the Human male used the same tone when he was mocking any one of them. He did it often enough that Xurf had no doubt the intent when he said, “You mock us for no reason, young Human.” The great-grandson of St. Admiral looked startled. Xurf continued, “We were all raised with the Humans of the Triad. We know their expressions as they know ours. There are very few secrets between the nineteen – eighteen – of us.”

“One of you died?”
Herd Mother Zei-go said gravely, “One of our youngest, neuter and only potential, but named none-the-less, Ked-sah-ti, died at the hands of Humans who sought to kill all of us.” She snapped a tentacle in irritation, then clapped her jaw. “As you can see they failed at most of their mission as we are here.”

The great-grandson of the greatest Human in the history of three worlds sighed, bowing his head, and said, “I am called Kendi, son of Khadijah and Morrison, grandson of Song and Rey and Abbas and Julianna, great grandson of St. Admiral, Marvel Louise Williams-Frederick.”

Xurf couldn’t help it, his limbs collapsed on themselves as if he was about to flee. His fur though, spiked in rage. He nearly fell to his belly. Only iron willpower kept him civilized and in control of his behavior. The Human Kendi, knew the lineage of St Admiral. Only those in the Triad, and few others, could recite it. Clearly this Human was of that exalted family. He managed to say, “We were directed to find you as Commander Patrick Bakhsh has told us that we may request from you a form of transportation to get us to our destination rendezvous. All has begun to collapse. We have no idea what the other Triads are doing. We must reach our safehouse, but cannot do it without the vehicle you have.”

Kendi stared down at Xurf, then looked to Zei-go. He sat down on the cold ground with a hard thump. He belched abruptly. Even another Human could have detected the sickness on his breath. Xurf said, “What?”

“The transportation you seek?”

“Yes?” said Xurf and Zei-go together. They both took the tone of threatening they had learned from Oscar and Xiomara.

The boy looked alarm then hung his head. Finally he said, “The transportation – the tank – no longer runs. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I’ve gone over the plans a thousand times. I’ve even made friends with an old mechanic in the village not far from here and tried to pump him of information, but even though he’s old, he doesn’t have anything about it!”

“A tank?” Xurf said.

“A vat to store liquids?” said Zei-go?

Kendi looked up at them, scowling. “No, not a vat! A vehicle, heavily armored with steel wheels. Riding in it – which I last did when I was a child…”

“You are a child!” said Xurf. “You’re no older than Oscar!”

“Who’s that?”

Zei-go said, “He is the male half of the Human part of our Triad.”

“You have a teenage dude in your group?”

“What is ‘dude’?” Zei-go muttered.

“A young male,” Kendi said.

“Why would that make any difference?” said Xurf.

“The mechanic said that all boys know how to work with machines like this. I can’t be a boy because I can’t make it work…” he hung his head, shaking it. The Pack Leader and the Herd Mother knew the motion well. Both Xio and ‘Car used it when they were about to give up.

Xurf softened his voice, lowering himself a bit closer to the ground as he said, “The strength of the Triad is that we each have strengths that will play to the others. Show us this ‘tank’. Together, perhaps we can make it work again.”

Kendi lifted his head, nodded and said, “Follow me.”
