LOVE IN A TIME OF ALIEN INVASION -- Chapter 30

http://www.featurepics.com/FI/Thumb300/20100507/Creepy-Truck-1532041.jpg
On Earth, there are three Triads intending to integrate not only the three peoples and stop the war that threatens to break loose and slaughter Humans and devastate their world.; but to stop the war that consumes Kiiote economy and Yown’Hoo moral fiber. The Braiders accidentally created a resonance wave that will destroy the Milky Way and the only way to stop it is for the Yown’Hoo-Kiiote-Human Triads to build a physical wall. The merger of Human-Kiiote-Yown’Hoo into a van der Walls Society may produce the Membrane to stop the wave.

The young experimental Triads are made up of the smallest primate tribe of Humans – Oscar and Kashayla; the smallest canine pack of Kiiote – six, pack leaders Qap and Xurf; and the smallest camelid herd of Yown’Hoo – a prime eleven, Dao-hi the Herd mother. On nursery farms and ranches away from the TC cities, Humans have tended young Yown’Hoo and Kiiote in secret for decades, allowing the two warring people to reproduce and grow far from their home worlds.

“We had nearly fallen into stagnation when we encountered the Kiiote.”

“And we into internecine war when we encountered the Yown’Hoo.”

“Yown’Hoo and Kiiote have been defending themselves for a thousand revolutions of our Sun.”

“Together, we might do something none of us alone might have done…a destiny that included Yown’Hoo, Kiiote, and Human.” (2/19/2015)

"So there are no aspects of your war with the Kiiote that you find humorous?" Shayla asked, incredulous.

Lt. Retired held up a hand for silence, then gave me another signal that clearly meant "slow down". I did, moving forward as the ferry slid across the slow-moving water. Shayla whispered, "Is this still the Mississippi?"

"Rum River."

"What?" Shayla said. Lt. Retired made a chopping motion. I could practically feel her bristle like a Kiiote in heat. She hated when anyone cut her off. I figured it was because she held her personal advice in higher regard than the rest of us did.

"I'll have you..." she began as the night lit up in brilliant fire outside the truck.

Lieutenant Retired moved faster than I’ve ever seen him move – in the short time we’d known him. Before I knew it, he was practically in my lap and had grabbed the wheel from me, swerving on the road as another ball of fire blossomed right where we’d been.

Shayla screamed, “We’re under attack!”

I would have slapped her if my hands weren’t being crushed on the steering wheel by Retired’s hands as he drove. “Floor it,” he said.

I floored it. The truck surged ahead, whipping around a corner. For a moment, I could see the river clearly ahead, as if we were going to drive into it. “Retired, what are you doing?”

He turned and shouted to the group – right into my face, “Hang on!” I tried to let up on the gas, but realized he had his foot over mine, too.

“You’re going to crash us over the edge – that’s your solution?”

“Shut up kid. I have to concentrate! When I go back to my seat, just keep driving!”

“Over the edge of the cliff and into the river?”

He turned again, this time grinning wildly, “Things are always more complicated than they appear. Just do it – or I’ll kill you after you screw things up and just do it myself. I’d rather have you on my...”

He jumped back to his seat, put on his seatbelt and braced his arms against the dashboard. Another curve in the road was rushing up at us, clear in the radar and sonar screen that was the windshield. I could do what he said or die.

It looked for all the world like if I did what he said, we WOULD die!

I said, “Either way!”, floored the accelerator and jerked the wheel to the left, following the curve. Everyone in back screamed. A fireball blossomed in front of where we’d have been flying if I’d followed Retired’s order. I leaned on the accelerator as we came out onto a straightaway, flying along a road that was remarkably smooth and in one piece.

From Retired’s side of the truck, I heard him say, “The boy can think for himself.” He turned to me and said, “Keep heading straight. On your right, just after we cross a wooden bridge, you’ll see the remains of a mansion, veer right and up the drive and stop in front of it when I say to.”

I nodded, plowing through the night, following the sonar and radar traces alongside the road from me as we drove through a bombed out cluster of buildings. After a few moments, I saw a pair of torches flickering in the night ahead. “What do I do...”

“Don’t stop. Whatever you do.” I nodded and kept on. The truck lit up the bridge structure behind the torches. Even in the strange imagery of sonar and radar, the bridge looked like it was about to collapse.

“Is it going to hold up under the truck?”

“Leave that part to me.”

Shayla and the Herd Mother said at the same time, “What’s going on up there?”

“We’re a little busy right now, but as soon as we survive driving over this rickety old bridge, I’ll come back and tell you.”

“What rickety old...”

Suddenly, machine gun fire spanged off of us. “Humans!” I shouted...

IDEAS ON TUESDAYS 210

http://worth1000.s3.amazonaws.com/submissions/330500/330673_a8c1_sqr.jpgEach Tuesday, rather than a POSSIBLY IRRITATING ESSAY, I'd like to both challenge you and lend a helping hand. I generate more speculative and teen story ideas than I can ever use. My family rolls its collective eyes when I say, "Hang on a second! I just have to write down this idea..." Here, I'll include the initial inspiration (quote, website, podcast, etc) and then a thought or two that came to mind. These will simply be seeds -- plant, nurture, fertilize, chemically treat, irradiate, test or stress them as you see fit. I only ask if you let me know if anything comes of them.

Somokene shielded his eyes from the blood-red dome of the Sun as it set and said, “The new star does not fade with day. You know what that means.”

Squatting on the bare, rounded boulder, Bardinanda sniffed the air and said, “Yes. It means you need to bathe.”

Somokene shook his head, “Be serious, Sister!”

“I am always serious, Servicer.”

He squatted as well in the lee of the boulder. A cold wind blew from the south, off of the glacier wall that fenced the entire equator of the World in. It was impossible to go farther north or south without paying the exorbitant fees of the Ice Lords. He said, “It means that the end is nigh.”

This time Bardinanda laughed outright. “Which end is this, brother?”

“You know as well as I do.”

“But I love to hear you say it. It makes me appreciate history.”

He sighed as he unfolded a heat cloth and anchored the four corners with the plutonium disks he carried. They had decayed to inertness and he had carved and polished the ancient reactor core slices himself. Incised on the surface were his logograph and Bardinanda’s. He tapped the cloth and it glowed red. He held out his hand and a moment later, she placed the aquapon gently in it. Far heavier than it looked, it was a gate into their food trough hidden on the other side of the World in Uluru. He set it on the cloth and said, “This is the one thousand, four hundred and sixty-ninth End Time; one million, three hundred and ninety-six thousand, four hundred and twenty-first Year since the founding of Human civilization.”

Bardinanda sighed and slithered down the boulder, flat, splayed feet gripping the rough surface. Patting Somokene’s bare head, she said, “You know that despite the fact that Endless Ending is a tenet of your faith, eventually it will be the Last End Time.”

“There is a sect that believes that, yes. I don’t belong to it, but I have studied it.”

She nodded, running slender fingers over the sensitive skin of his head. They both shuddered. Nodding, she turned her back on the setting Sun and said softly, “Then perhaps you are the best one to judge me when I say that I believe the Last End Time has come upon us and I am the Harbinger and you are my Prophet.”

POSSIBLY IRRITATING ESSAYS: Will Genetic Engineering Lead To A New Caste System?

http://i.imgur.com/WnWTeNI.jpg
Using the panel discussions of the most recent World Science Fiction Convention in London this past August, I will jump off, jump on, rail against, and shamelessly agree with the BRIEF DESCRIPTION given in the pdf copy of the Program Guide. The link is provided below…

“Speculative Biology is concerned with future evolution, alternative evolution, and the SF biology of other worlds. At the boundary of art and science, these speculations are grounded firmly in biomechanics, photosynthesis and evolution. This panel introduces our Speculative Biology track which continues with presentations through the weekend.” With: Dr Lewis Dartnell (M), Dougal Dixon, C. M. Kosemen, Mr. Gert van Dijk, Darren Naish

Tough to come up with a subject this AM…but when I reached this session description, I knew I’d “come home”. Then I realized that I’d been struggling with a theme these last few years. The Transhumanist movement appears to insist that human improvement via technology and bioengineering will end all strife, conflict, and division. Somehow, we’re supposed to move beyond our petty differences (ESPECIALLY religion) and transcend ourselves right into something so closely akin to godhood that I personally see no practical difference.

One series of stories I’ve been writing deals with a dearth of “alien life” in local space. There are no “intelligences” to form a Federation with thus far, and no Formics against whom we go to war, so with worlds only marginally habitable, Humans started adapting themselves.

Initially, the modifications were minor – getting rid of genetic diseases like Cystic Fibrosis, Scleroderma, and Congenital Heart Failure. Logical, helpful, tough to argue against.

Once the Marginal Earths were discovered – thousands of planets with too much CO2, too much oxygen, too much methane, too much radiation, not enough radiation, too much volcanism, not enough volcanism – Humans set to work adapting themselves to such environments. Eventually water worlds came to the fore and Humans were adapted to be aquatic, others were adapted to live in the atmosphere of Jupiter, Saturn, and some adapted to live in space.

In the Solar system, one group declared that it was too much. They took themselves into deep space and were never heard from again. Until they showed up as technologically advanced, genetic purists. No one who was less than 65% original Human DNA could be considered Human. The Empire of Man challenged the original worlds of Humanity who allied themselves into the Confluence. After a brief war fought to a stalemate, the two sides pulled back, their territories overlapping on the Brink, worlds where Confluans and Imperials staked claims but were so harsh or so immense, conflict was minimal.

My stories take place on the Brink, worlds like River, Sirmiq, and Ahi’ai’honua; this is where most of the conflict happens but it’s also where the cultures mix.

The Confluence acknowleges absolutely no boundaries. They feel free to slice and dice the Human genome, using whatever they want to from animals, plants, and experiment with suppressing certain Human genes – but the line between Human and alien is blurry and even some in the Confluence wonder what it is that makes us Human.

The Empire holds a line at minor modifications and using technology to cross over into harsh environments – but a rigid caste system has developed and some there wonder if that was what the founders had in mind. Humans who are obviously Human in every way but have modifications that allow for breathing in attenuated atmospheres, surviving vacuum accidents and high pressure environments, or who no longer have vestigial organs or strengthened bones, seem logical. But it is endoheretical (“Isaac Asimov...in Forward: The Role of the Heretic...mentioning religious, political, socioeconomic and scientific heresies...divided scientific heretics into endoheretics (those from within the scientific community) and exoheretics (those from without).”  [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heresy#Non-religious_usage]) and living on the Brink Worlds has created movement toward reuniting Humanity…

At any rate,  I first ran across Dougal Dixon’s book, AFTER MAN: A ZOOLOGY OF THE FUTURE, years ago when I was teaching a credit recovery science class. It inspired me to try something “different” and eventually led to my Alien Worlds classes – which I’ve been teaching for the past 18 years. Since then, I’ve speculated on the biology of both aliens and Humans extensively. I have a universe where only us and the plantimal WheetAh exists. Another has Humans as “Vietnamese” or “Korean” civilian bystanders in an ideological war between the llamoid Yown’Hoo and the canine Kiiote who find Earth the only local planet on which they can breed and raise their young.

The fact is that I love biology. I wish I had been there to listen to the discussion! But will such a program end up creating new "undesireables" and a new underclass?

MARTIAN HOLIDAY 69 : Paolo Enroute

http://www.scientificamerican.com/sciam/cache/file/CFBF65DD-4B84-4FBD-9CA04B93CF24A153.jpg
On a well-settled Mars, the five major city Council regimes struggle to meld into a stable, working government. Embracing an official Unified Faith In Humanity, the Councils are teetering on the verge of pogrom directed against Christians, Molesters, Jews, Rapists, Buddhists, Murderers, Muslims, Thieves, Hindu, Embezzlers and Artificial Humans – anyone who threatens the official Faith and the consolidating power of the Councils. It makes good sense, right – get rid of religion and Human divisiveness on a societal level will disappear? An instrument of such a pogrom might just be a Roman holiday...To see the rest of the chapters, go to SCIENCE FICTION: Martian Holiday on the right and scroll to the bottom for the first story. ? z Z

The image vanished for a few moments and when it reappeared, he couldn’t understand what he saw at first. Scowling, he ordered the image to rotate slowly. Still nothing. Then he asked it to reverse the magnification again until the entire satellite was visible. Even then, he couldn’t identify anything until the image grew to include the entire airlock.

That was when he gasped as the image of a Human-scaled being shaped like a dolphin – in the same way a Human was shaped like a chimpanzee – floated in the air. It turned to face the camera and it was at that point that he’d passed out.

“The hell?” he muttered. He stared for a long time before he finally said, “Looks like the alienologists were right.” He stared at the image of the creature. Without the computer changing the ultrasound image into a visual image, he’d be blind to it. It was logical to assume then that they would have been blind to him.

Or would it? Might this alien been able to see him and be invisible to him at the same time? Or would it have been stranger than that? He couldn’t think of a reason to have a satellite that was able to project ultrasonic images, either. Gathering orbital data, for sure. But why would it be able to project an image?

Unless it was a first contact device.

He pursed his lips, studying the satellite. Maybe it was meant to send a message to someone else. He leaned forward and brought up the ‘bug’s data base, searching for a program he might be able to use to find out what he wanted to know.

Half an hour later, he’d answered enough questions that the computer was ready when he tapped, “Go.” The initial series of tests needed the airlock waldoes to attempt to take samples of the surface of the satellite. After a few moments, it reported to him that it would need two hours to both collect enough samples and run a detailed analysis. He was lucky it had the geological survey package still intact. Not all ‘bugs were still able to do it.

He sat back, staring at the airlock, unable to see the alien satellite but knowing it was there. Aquatic beings, delphinoid, who communicated in a frequency beyond Human hearing – who once had an interest in a planet essentially devoid of water. Ho were able to build advanced satellites that may or may not have orbited Mars at some time. He stood up with a sigh.

He needed to get moving again. Even though Chen and Chumani had been after him to preach to them, Mars Authority wasn’t benign. He was a wanted man, certainly a rabble rouse if nothing else. He glanced back at the airlock. What if the Free Martian belief in the Watchers was true? What if these aquatic beings were the Watchers? Without a doubt, Mars had once had both ocean and atmosphere. What if these beings had watched from the ocean?

He sighed. Too many questions to ask that depended from…nothing. He went back to the controls and engaged the ‘bug’s drive, rolling forward again. He’d have to wait for the satellite’s analysis to figure out WHAT set of questions he needed to pursue.

Whether the logical set that led to some faction or another from Earth, the Moon, Venus, or Mars losing a spy satellite – or the irrational set that led to evidence that Humanity was not alone in the universe. The second set of questions also begged an answer to the question of “when did they watch?”

The ‘bug had been rolling for ten minutes before Paolo realized that there were two other questions that depended from that answer: were they still watching and WHO were they trying to contact? He shivered and turned up the ‘bug’s heater.

IDEAS ON TUESDAYS 209

Each Tuesday, rather than a POSSIBLY IRRITATING ESSAY, I'd like to both challenge you and lend a helping hand.

SF Trope: TheoTech (A Science Fiction subgenre that borrows the aesthetics, symbolism and terminology of religion, the occult, and New Age conspiracy theories.) and The Corrupt Church http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CorruptChurch

Wolf Alaba tapped the virtual computer screen projected on the grimy surface of the table. He said, "What's the difference between this and dealing with ghosts?"

Emilie Baumgartner shook her head. "I could say everything, but I  know the answer you're going for is that there's no difference, so I'll go with that."

Wolf gave her a dirty look then said, "There's no difference. Given that premise, then what's the difference between what we're doing and what God said when Saint Timothy wrote, ‘The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.’ ?” (I Tim 4:1)

“It’s a holographic projector..."

“It’s programmed to create the keyboard of a computer, Em. What’s to prevent me from reprogramming it to project the spirit of your grandmother; or the Pope; or the Prime Minister of Canada?”

“Of course there’s nothing to prevent you from reprogramming it! That’s why we’re...” Outside the room they heard a series of rhythmic thuds. “Ordnance. The Temple’s under attack.”

“We haven’t finished...” he began. She drew a slender wand, aimed it at the projector painted on the back of his hand. There was a flash and he screamed, jumping backwards. “At lease you could have let me neutralize it myself! I’ll have a burn on the back of my hand shaped exactly like…” He stopped talking as the floor shook with a tremendous explosion.

“There’s no way to get the Bible anymore, Wolf. It’s been encrypted and corrupted…”

“The Bible has always been corrupted! You can’t read it...” energy weapon fire echoed down the hallway. The HQ of the United Faith In Humanity had been their last hope of breaking the stranglehold of the very organization that sought to mold all Human belief into a single, non-moral philosophy that was so rewoven that no one on Earth could possible reject it. “This was pretty much our last hope of getting an uncorrupted file. The Burners took care of pretty much all of the...”

The weapons fire stopped abruptly. There were a polite tap at the door. Wolf and Emilie…
